Parts of battery | Battery plate is made up of ?

Various parts of battery: –

As we know that a battery is build by various parts. In this article we will discuss of these parts of battery. A battery made up of these following parts.

  1. Positive and negative plate
  2. Electrolyte
  3. Separator
  4. Container
  5. Cover of cell
  6. Partition wall
  7. Connecting rod of bar
  8. Terminal post

Positive and Negative plate: –

Positive and negative plates are a very important part of battery. Whole concept depends on it. As we know that a battery made by connecting many cells. So, to increase current capacity, we use a group of positive plate and negative plate. The plate made up of antimony lead alloy. It looks reticulated and these plates are covered by a active material. This active material helps plates by giving support and also help to flow charge in plate properly.

positive and negative plate respectively

Generally, positive plate and negative plate both are same in the terms of design but sometimes negative plate is more light than positive plate.

Electrolyte: –

Electrolyte is a type of solution. In which a type of acid and distilled water is used. In every type of battery, different type of electrolyte is used. If we talk about lead acid battery, dilute sulfuric acid and distilled water are used to make electrolyte. Three parts of distilled water and one part of dilute sulphuric acid is use to make this electrolyte solution.

Positive and negative plates are poured in this electrolyte solution.

 Separators: –

Separators are used to insulate positive and negative plates. It prevents short circuit phenomena between positive and negative plate. A separator should be porous so that electrolyte can circulate to every plate. This separator made up of pourable rubber, glass, cotton, or microporous plastic.

 Container: –

Container is an outer part of battery. This is made up of hard rubber, plastic, glass, celluloid or ceramic. Hard rubber containers are moulded. And this type of container is used in Cars, Trucks, Buses, and Trains. Glass made container is used in photo voltaic plants. Celluloid made container’s battery is used in portable wireless sets.

Generally, container’s structure is rectangular structure. As you can in the images.

Cover of cells: –

This is also made up of hard rubber. After inserting all plates in container, a cover is used over the container and this cover plate fixed by sealing compound. This cover plate is used to prevent from outer atmosphere like dust or active materials which is present in air.

Vent Plug: –

On the top of cover of cell or cover plate; some vent plugs are used. By this vent gas (formed in battery during charging and discharging) in bring put from battery. Distilled water and acid also inserted through it when it needed. Inspection of cell reaction also observed by this vent plug.

Partition wall: –

Partition wall is also a part of container. This is used to separate electrolyte of two cells.

Connecting bar or rod: –

As the name depicts that this bar is use to connect cells in series within battery.  This bar is made up of lead alloy metal.

Terminal post: –

Terminal post is that place where positive and negative terminal are presented. By this terminal we connect load to the battery. In terminal post there are two type of terminal post one is positive and another is negative terminal post. Generally negative terminal post’s diameter is shorter than positive terminal post.
